- The professor in charge of the Medicine internships is María Almudena Sánchez Villegas.
- Health care internships are a basic part of the students’ training in the Degree in Medicine.
- The syllabus includes a series of subjects called Prácticas (Internships), which allow students to carry out clinical internships enabling them to be in touch with real clinical experiences and scenarios with users and patients. Students can thus acquire a comprehensive view of the profession. In addition, the internships intend to reinforce professional principles and values such as responsibility, empathy, therapeutic communication, and develop clinical reasoning and critical judgement.
- The internships aim at getting professionals able to provide and manage people’s health in a competent, safe and respectful manner. They are planned so, from the beginning, students are familiar with the environment in which they will be able to develop their professional career and value value both the health care they will be able to provide and the structure it is provided from, and the services focusing on the health promotion, upkeeping and recovery.
- They syllabus of the Degree in Medicine contains 51 ECTS of health care internships divided into five Internships which take place from year 2 to year 6. They allow students to rotate around different areas of the professional practice, both specialised care and primary and socio-health care.
Centres and agreements
- Internships are carried out in centres and medical units collaborating with the university
- The relation with those health care institutions collaborating with the practical training of the Degree in Medicine is defined by the collaboration agreement signed between UPNA and the Health Care Department of the Government of Navarre between 2016 and 2020 (still in force, a new one pending to be signed).
A wide and varied amount of lecturers take part in the subject: it is 100% practical and entails an individual monitoring and tutelage in different specialisation fields.
University professors and tutors and health care internships coordinators, linked to the health care system, take part in it.
UPNA teaching staff
- They may belong to the Medicine, Surgery, Preventive Health Care and Public Health areas, and they are members of the Health Sciences Department.
- Each lecturer is tutor to 15-20 students, teaches the follow-up seminars and signs the reports.
Health care system staff collaborating with the teaching
Health care internships coordinators
- People responsible for the meeting of the syllabus in each health care clinical unit.
- They are appointed by the chancellor for each academic year - one coordinator per internship unit..
- They assess, either by themselves or jointly with the tutors, the students’ internships and notify the coordinator of the health care internships in their area of their assessment.
Tutor of Health care internships
- Person in charge of direct teaching to students in the unit where the health care internships take place.
- They are appointed by the chancellor for each academic year, depending on the number of students assigned per unit.
- They assess, either by themselves or jointly with the Coordinator, the students’ internships and notify the person in charge of the student and lecturer of the subject at UPNA of their assessment.
Goals:
- To reflect on the Health Care System (regarding medicine, nursing and social work), and they way teamwork is carried out.
- • To analyse the relation with the patient and with the system in practice, regarding the competencies acquired in the areas of knowledge studied in terms 1, 2 and 3, already passed by medicine students (see Guides on UPNA website on: Introduction to Medical Science, Psychology, Epidemiology, Deontology-Bioethics-Communication, Physical Exercise and Functional Capacity)
- To observe the interpersonal skills and competencies that take place in the clinical practice, above all regarding communication and doctor-patient relation competencies.
- To take care of the special relation with chronic patients, and the importance of physical exercise as preventive, or of rehabilitation for recovery and assistance in the disease process.
Duration and Calendar:
The duration of Internship I is 6 ECTS or 150 hours. All 150 hours will be done at the end of semester 4, during the four last weeks of class (May) and the hours are distributed as follows:
- 90% (135h) in-person internship in two areas of the health care system: Primary Care and Hospital Care (Home Hospitalisation and Chronic Patients; Rehabilitation; and other hospital services).

- Primary Care for 2 weeks, in different Health Centres both urban and rural
- Hospital Services (Rehabilitation, Home Hospitalisation, Chronic patients units and other hospital services), for 2 weeks
Seminars
During the rotations of Internship I, students will attend 2 seminars (at the beginning and at the end of the internship). The other 2 follow-up seminars will be included in the internship weekly time, and in turn will be used to carry out a continuous assessment of the acquired knowledge and skills according to the goals of this Internship I, as well as to begin drafting the innovation projects in the Primary Care rotation such as the "Learning with Families in Primary Care Project", or the "Prevailing Chronic Diseases".
Goals:
The goals appear in the teaching plan of this Internship II and are mostly based on the Learning outcomes established in the Report of the Degree in Medicine.
- To know the foundations of the medical care reality through rotations around different centres and units within the health world.
- To perform functional tests, determine vital parametres and interpret them, as well as a basic physical exam and Interpret a regular blood test.
- To be able to gather a full anamnesis, focused on the patient and targeting different diseases, interpreting its meaning..
- To be able to perform a physical exam with machines and systems.
Organisation of Internship II
Duration and Calendar:
Internship II takes 9 ECTS or 225 hours, out of which 22 are for Seminars related to this Internship.
