ABSTRACT:
Despite the complex transformation of space, people, and economies due to neoliberal policies, the rural-urban linkages have remained strong and the traditional way of politics figured out by populist concerns has ruled Greece and Turkey for many decades. This study focuses on the consequences of populist policies conducted by SYRIZA (2015-2019) in Greece and Justice and Development Party (AKP, since 2002) in Turkey by addressing their impacts on rural spaces with a fieldwork research conducted in Greece (2016) and Turkey (2010). On the basis of the experience of Greece and Turkey, here it is argued that right- and left-wing populism use left-behind rural areas as engines of populism and share common elements in rural policy making such as the will of people, ruling elites as enemies, social welfare policies, and romanticized view of rural spaces. Nevertheless, the main distinctions in their political spectrum are mobilization of farmers, social movements, environmental policies, the role of cooperatives, and the food crisis. Despite the inclusionary policies of left-wing populist parties, the tendency to shift away from democratic institutions still remains as a threat.
