Key Aspects of Restorative Justice and Community-based Restorative Practices

This university microcredential, designed in collaboration with the Domestic, Public Administration and Justice Department of Government of Navarre, forms part of public policy initiatives promoting restorative justice and restorative practices, as set out by the Directorate-General for Justice and reflected in Regional Law 4/2023 of 9 March on restorative justice, mediation and community restorative practices.
You will learn to apply a restorative justice perspective in diverse social and cultural contexts, gaining an understanding of the benefits of restorative justice for crime prevention, the development of frameworks for coexistence, and the promotion of a culture of peace.

The University Microcredential in Fundamental Aspects of Restorative Justice and Community Restorative Practices, offered by Public University of Navarre, is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the principles and foundations of restorative justice.  

With an interdisciplinary approach and the involvement of experts, this course explores key topics such as restorative justice in Spain, restorative tools, and the role of the facilitator in restorative processes. It also examines the differences between restorative justice, therapeutic justice, and transitional justice, with a focus on their applications and limitations in a variety of contexts..

Admission profile:

Individuals interested in restorative justice who are between 25 and 64 years of age at the start date of the course.

If, after the admission process, there are still available spots, individuals under 25 or over 64 years old - at the start of the course - who meet the profile and access requirements may be admitted. These places will be assigned strictly in order of registration until the quota is filled.

Access requirements: 

  • High School Diploma, Intermediate Vocational Training Certificate, or equivalent (EQF level 4).

Selection criteria: 

Access profile and requirements met, based strictly on the order of registration. 

Once the course has begun, the final list of admitted participants will be published.

Outcomes

  • To identify the fundamental concepts and principles of restorative justice and community restorative practices.
  • To assess the impact of restorative processes on victims, offenders, and the wider community.
  • To apply a restorative justice perspective in a range of social and cultural contexts.
  • To develop facilitation skills in restorative justice contexts.
  • To reflect on international and national legal frameworks underpinning restorative justice, including the Spanish legal system.

Training goals

  • To understand and critically analyse the principles and foundations of restorative justice, its relationship with the criminal justice system, and its preventive approach to conflict resolution.
  • To explore and evaluate the differences between restorative justice, therapeutic justice, and transitional justice, focusing on their applications and limitations in diverse contexts.
  • To study and reflect on relevant international and national legislation on restorative justice.
  • To develop and apply knowledge of community restorative practices, their implementation, and the benefits they offer in rebuilding social cohesion.
  • To identify and evaluate restorative justice initiatives, projects, and legislative developments in Spain, gaining insight into their scope and limitations within the current criminal justice system.

  • Timetable of in-person lessons: Tuesday, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
  • The classroom will be notified by e-mail to the participants before the course begins.

The final grade will be determined based on the following weightings:

  • Final multiple-choice exam: 50 %
  • Minimum attendance of 85% of sessions: 50 %

Obtaining the microcredential is subject to passing the enrolled ECTS credits, in accordance with Article 27 of the Regulations Governing UPNA's Own Degree Programmes.

Standard Tuition Fee: € 630

Tuition fee with a discount:

  • € 189 - 70% funded by European Funds for admitted participants who are between 25 and 64 years old at the start of the course.
  • € 63 - Additional 20% funded by Government of Navarre for individuals who meet the admission profile and are between 25 and 64 years old at the start of the course.

This microcredential is part of the Expert Diploma in Restorative Justice, which comprises the following micro-credentials:

To obtain the Diploma, it is necessary to:

  • Successfully complete the ECTS credits for all the microcredentials that make up the Diploma.
  • Hold a university degree.
  • Submit a Final Expert Project (1 ECTS).
  • Apply for the diploma and pay the corresponding administrative and issuance fees.
