Research plan and training plan

Research plan

Prepare the research plan on the topic agreed on with your thesis supervisor/s, and send it within 6 months from the first registration date. It must be signed by you, the supervisor/s and, if applicable, the tutor. The signatures must be original, and the content must stick to the established template.

The programme’s Academic Commission will review the Plan within one month:

  • If the decision is negative, the permanent commission may established, if deemed appropriate, a new deadline to modify or correct mistakes in the research plan.

Training programme

The doctoral training programme at UPNA is divided into the following categories:

It develops throughout the drafting of the doctoral thesis and includes the following elements:

  • Development of the research process
  • Research outcome
  • Knowledge sharing and network development

The common core will require doctoral students to::

  • Be the author of at least on publication about their research, written in the language of the topic, and addressed to an international audience
  • Present at least two seminars at Public University of Navarre, or at a forum in which Public University of Navarre is taking part, on your doctoral thesis, which are assessed by at least 3 experts in fields similar to the research topic
  • Have taken active part (oral presentation or poster) in at least one international conference

Thematic training activities include advanced courses, guest conferences, summer schools and doctorate seminars. The attention focuses on the development of academic, intellectual and technical skills.

The value of all training activities will be translated into Thematic Training (HEF-T) hours, and will be offered within a schedule which allows doctoral students to accumulate 100 HEF-T hours throughout the Doctoral degree.

Researchers may propose to carry out doctoral conferences through UPNA’s Research Institutes.

Cross-disciplinary training activities intend to facilitate the development of transferable capacities and skills which could be useful in contexts other that university ones. EDONA is responsible for defining these activities. Activities offered by other university units in their regular courses and seminars programming, which may be of interest for doctoral students of different Programmes, may also be included.

The value of all activities will be translated into Cross-disciplinary Training (HEF-TR) hours, and will be offered within a schedule which allows doctoral students to accumulate 30 HEF-TR hours throughout the Doctoral degree.

Activities Document

The procedure to control the carrying out of academic activities will be implemented taking into account the deadlines stated on the academic calendar for doctoral degrees, as follows:

  • Doctoral students: you must upload the completed training activities, along with the certificate of completion, to the activity document in the SIGMA application.
  • Supervisors or tutors: they must accept or reject the activities proposed by the doctoral students in the activity document and prepare the progress reports for both the research plan and the activity document.
  • Academic Commissions: they will validate the relevant activities so they can be included in the record and conduct the annual evaluation of the doctoral student's work.

Procedure to formalise the training activities document

In order to formalise the training activities document, following is the guide to upload activities to Sigma

Note: EDONA has prepared the homogenisation document to guide doctoral students when it comes to allocate “hours equivalent to training” (HEF) to the various types of training activities they carry out. The number of HEF hours does not match the actual hours invested in the event, but the number of hours with an equivalence assessed in the Homogenisation document, depending on the type of activity carried out.

Procedure to have training activities previous to the first registration recognised
