The Public University of Navarre (UPNA) and the Scientific Institute for Innovation and Applied Technologies of Navarra (INCITA) are collaborating on the Gondola project, the aim of which is to develop a system which automatically manages the documentation of a software project, in such a way that time is saved for the computer programmers. The research, begun in June 2011, is set to finish at the end of 2013 and is part of the INNPACTO programme that encourages cooperation amongst research bodies and businesses in order to undertake joint R+D+I projects.
The UPNA research team is being led by Jesús Villadangos Alonso, senior lecturer in computer languages and systems, and is made up of Mikel Ayape, Mikel Díaz, Almudena Ochoa, Alberto Córdoba and José Javier Astrain. According to Villadangos, “Documenting software in the process of drawing up a project is a time-consuming task because the documentation has to change every time the computer code changes during the process. The advantage provided by this project is having a tool adapted for this management to be carried out automatically”.
In concrete, the system developed is able to advise the programmer that elements of the code are undocumented. It also facilitates this documentation through using voice-processing tools to facilitate the insertion of comments. The system is also able to gather information pertaining to those projects developed at the INCITA company with its environment of iBAP development. “The tool automatically captures information on iBAP projects and transforms it into documentation of two kinds: one for the end user and another, different one for the programmers”, pointed out Mr Villadangos. “Being able to create documentation at the click of a mouse, it takes only seconds to generate it and thus considerably reduce the time employed in these tasks”.
