Leiden

The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2023 offers important information on the scientific performance of 1411 relevant universities all over the world. It is made by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies of Leiden University (Netherlands).

This ranking classifies universities according to their bibliometric data. Bibliometry is the discipline that can be used to get to know and improve the impact and visibility of scientific production. Among the goals of bibliometric analysis are the study of the size, growth and distribution of scientific documents, as well as the structure and dynamics of the groups that produce and use said documents and the information contained therein.

In order to be included in this ranking, more than 800 publications indexed in the Web of Science for the analysed period - in this case 2018-2021 - must have been published.

It provides various ranking lists according to geographic area, scientific area, and type of indicators.

For example, in terms of scientific impact, in scientific areas as a whole, UPNA ranks 1st place among Spanish universities in the PP indicator (top 1%). This indicator shows the proportion of publications - out of the total - which are among the 1% most quoted in their fields. If this indicator focuses on the “Mathematics and Computer Science” area or on the “Biomedical and Health Sciences” area, UPNA ranks 1st place among Spanish universities and 66 and 69 respectively worldwide.

When the chosen indicator is PP (top 10 %) (the proportion of publications out of the total which are among the 10% most quoted in their fields), UPNA ranks 3rd place, among Spanish universities and in scientific areas as a whole.

Alternatively, looking at the international collaborative publications indicator (it shows the proportion of publications out of the total written in collaboration with other organisations of two or more countries), UPNA ranks 2nd place among Spanish universities in the “Biomedical and Health Sciences” area, and 5th in the “Mathematics and Computer Science” area.
