Currently, I work as a Full Professor at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), where I have been recognized for my outstanding contributions to the field of metamaterials and photonics. Notably, I was awarded the Research Award in the Area of Exact, Biological, Medical, and Technological Sciences from UPNA for my overall scientific trajectory in 2023, and I have been included in Stanford University's list of the top 2% most-cited scientists in the world (2020-2024). My work in metamaterials has garnered significant impact, with my research cited over 8000 times (GScholar), and I have authored more than 160 international journal papers, with 104 in Q1 and 27 in D1 journals.
My research career has focused on the study and application of disruptive devices based on metamaterials, with a constant evolution. I authored three highly cited papers on metamaterials: Opt. Lett. 29, 2500 (2004) (>170 citations), Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 197401 (2004) (>750 citations), and Opt. Express 14, 5445 (2006) (>130 citations).
In 2009, I started my post-doc at UPNA as PI of the prestigious Consolider EMET Engineering Metamaterials project (CSD2008-00066), focusing on extraordinary transmission metamaterials and achieving several milestones, such as the first global demonstration of a THz fishnet metaprism and THz metalenses.
During my Ramón y Cajal fellowship (2012-2016), I launched an independent research career with groundbreaking results, including invisibility cloaks (of great media relevance), graphene devices, etc. In 2017, I was appointed UPNA Distinguished Researcher and soon after became an Associate Professor, heading the Multispectral Biosensing Group at Navarrabiomed. In 2021, I was upgraded to Titular de Universidad. I currently hold 3 six-year research periods (“sexenios”): 2003-08, 2009-14, and 2015-20.
Recently, I have expanded my research to encompass a wide range of technologies, from mmWaves to infrared, with a notable collaboration with Dr. J. S. Dolado (CFM-CSIC) on the revolutionary concept of Photonic Metaconcrete (PMC) – a sustainable alternative for radiative cooling structures, supported by the MIRACLE project (H2020-FETOPEN-964450). This cutting-edge work has been recognized and funded by the EU and the Spanish Research Agency. I am excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible and making a real-world impact with this innovative work.
►IMPACT: My impact in the field is evident through my h-index of 49, with over 8000 citations (GScholar) and my inclusion in the Stanford University’s list of the top 2% most-cited scientists in the world since the first edition (2020-2023) is a testament to my contributions.
►SCIENTIFIC PRODUCTION: More than 160 international journal papers (104 Q1; 27 D1, 11 invited), 5 book chapters, near 300 international conferences (1 plenary, 1 keynote, 31 invited), and over 70 national conferences.
►PROJECT MANAGMENT: 49 research projects of regional, national and international scope and have been PI in 15. Currently, I am the PI of 7 projects: 3 European (MIRACLE, ACROSS, COOLCRETE), 3 national (PID2022-137845NB-C21, TED2021-132074B-C33, CPP2021-008757), and 1 regional.
