Alayn Loayssa Lara has got the MSc in Telecommunications Engineering (1997) and the PhD. in Telecommunications Engineering (2001) degrees, both from the Universidad Pública de Navarra (UPNA).
In 1998, he started lecturing in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at UPNA, where he is currently a Full Professor (Catedrático de Universidad). In 2001/02, he also worked as Visiting Research Fellow at the Australian Photonics Cooperative Research Center (Melbourne). He has held academic positions such as Subdirector de la ETSIIT (2006‑2010) and Director de Área de Ordenación Académica in the Vicerrectorado de Ordenación Académica (2012-2015).
His research interests are in the fiber optic sensors and optical fiber communications fields. In the last decade, the focus has been mainly on distributed fiber optic sensors, particularly, those based on the stimulated Brillouin scattering and the Rayleigh scattering effects. This research has led to more than 120 international publications in journals and conferences. He has also published 4 book chapters and supervised 6 doctoral theses. He is also the inventor of two international patents related to distributed Brillouin sensors that are currently licensed. In addition, he has participated in a number of publicly funded competitive projects and also in industrial R&D projects with companies.
He has regularly participated in the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP) and the International Conference on Sensing Technology (ICST). Furthermore, he has been on the Local Organizing Committee of the 41st edition of the European Conference in Optical Communications held in Valencia in 2015. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the "Sensors" Journal (ISSN 1424-8220, IF 3.031). Finally, he is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
