Seminario de investigación: Improvisation in digitalized firms in the context of Covid crisis and its impact on international performance
INARBE organiza este seminario que se celebrará el día 19 de junio a las 12:00 en la sala de conferencias del edificio Jerónimo de Ayanz, impartido por Sylvie Chetty, Uppsala University, Sweden.
Abstract: The context of our study is the Covid pandemic and its impact on improvisation in digitalized firms and their international performance. The pandemic created high uncertainty and turbulence in the global business environment and businesses had to act quickly to survive these rapid changes. These conditions are ideal for firms to use improvisation to cope with the challenges of uncertainty and time pressure. Furthermore, the pandemic resulted in the acceleration and relevance of digitalization because of dramatic changes in the business environment. The usefulness of digitalization became pronounced during the crisis as it provided digital tools for many firms to survive through an intense period of uncertainty and unpredictability.
Despite its importance there is scant research on improvisation in digitalized firms and the impact on international performance. The purpose of our study is to address this gap by delving into improvisation in digitalized small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and to understand what drives international performance in the context of the pandemic. We develop a conceptual model by applying improvisation theory and network theory in the context of digitalized firms. This study involves a survey of 424 Canadian manufacturing SMEs and how they conducted their business during the pandemic. The questions focused on their market situation, digitalization efforts, international business activities, as well as business operations over the past three years (2019-2021). We analyzed the data with Structural Equation Modelling based on SmartPLS. The results suggest that both digital networking and digital operations mediate the positive effect of improvisation on firm international performance. Meanwhile, market dynamism strengthens the positive relationship between improvisation and digital networking.
We contribute to the international business literature by providing novel insights about how market dynamism moderates the strength of the relationship between improvisation and digital networking and digital operation and their impact on international performance. We position digitalization as an important mechanism for improvising firms to use to cope with the challenges of both market dynamism, and uncertainty and turbulence during the pandemic.
