M. Algarra graduated in Chemical Sciences (Univ. Malaga, 1995). Under the direction of Prof. M. Hernández I obtained my PhD in Analytical Chemistry (Univ. Malaga, 2000), where were developed analytical methods based on luminescent techniques (Phosphorimetry & Fluorimetry) for the detection of environmental contaminants (PAHs, PCBs, Pesticides, etc.), entitled: "Applications of Cyclodextrins and Selective Solid Supports for the Determination of Environmental Contaminants using Luminescent Techniques". This activity was developed in collaboration with the Lab. Physico-Chimie Toxic (University of Bordeaux I, LPTC-CNRS) under the direction of Prof. P. Garrigues & M. Lamotte. The thesis was funded by grants from the Regional Government of Andalucia, European Science Foundation and the European Ass. Geochemistry Organic. During the development I was hired by the Dept. of Inorganic Chemistry to carry out technical functions in the New Micro/meso-porous Catalysts for De-NOx applications, Programa: IV PROGRAMA MARCO (Prof. E. Rodríguez-Castellón).
POST DOC:
- Jul-Nov 2000: The Canon Foundation in Europe subsidized my stay in Japan, where I had an apprenticeship in low temperature spectroscopic techniques (FT-IR matrix isolation and Shpol'Kii spectroscopies) with Dr S. Matsuzawa at the National Institute Resources & Environment in Tsukuba.
- Feb 2001-Oct 2002: I was awarded a scholarship in the Physics Department at the Nova University of Lisbon, which under the direction of Prof. L. Costa I was developing my scientific activity in the project EC RTN "Laboratory Studies of Reactive Intermediates Relevant to Atmospheric Chemistry and Combustion ", in conjunction with the Univ. Southampton (JM Dyke) & TU Munich (V Bondybey), where organic azides were synthesized and characterized by FTIR-Matrix Isolation and PES.
- Feb 2003- Oct 2004: Chemistry Dept. at the University of Oporto (FCT, Portugal), which under the direction of Professor Cordeiro began to develop electrochemical methods. During this period a collaboration was established, aiming to be funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation (low temperature azides with Prof. Mascetti (Univ. Bordeaux).
SENIOR
- 2005-2008: I was working in the food industry as a Lab Manager developing functional foods together with Prof. Jiménez from the University of Malaga.
- Jun 2008 - Jun 2013: SENIOR RESEARCH: I was awarded the FCT (Portugal) contract with the Sciences 2007 program at the Univ. Oporto, with Prof. JCG Esteves da Silva. Here I started my scientific activity independently. Activity focused on the development of Fluorescent Nanoparticles (Quantum Dots), tutoring the PhD of Bruno B Campos: Dendrimer and Cadmium free Quantum dots Fluorescent Nanocomposites-Jul 2017) and several Master's works (5); as well as teaching activities.
- June 2013-December 2021: Back at Univ. Málaga (ANDALUCIA TECH program in Dept. Inorganic Chemistry), I started developing carbon-based fluorescent nanoparticles (Carbon dots), which have been profitable in high-IF publications. These publications have made me collaborate with different National Centers: Dept Physics, UMA (Prof. J. Benavente); Dept. Organic Chem, UCO (Prof. Luque); Dept. Analytical Chem. UAB (Prof. Manel del Valle); International Centers: Univ. Porto (Prof. JCG Esteves da Silva); the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research (Prof. K. Radotić) Univ. Belgrade; Madeira Chemistry Center, Prof. J. Rodrígues); City College Univ. New York (Prof. T.J. Bandosz). Likewise, activities have been developed at the ALBA Synchrotron in Barcelona since 2017- and continue (Dra. Ducić), all these activities related to Carbon dots and graphene quantum dots, in a wide variety of applications: Sensors; Bactericidal Activity; Cellular Activity (Therapy); Image Development fingerprints (This activity is supported by the presence of our group in the COST 16101 action as Part of National Committee (2017-2021). M. Algarra has to different COST ACTIONS related to Carbon Nanoparticles: CA21126 [WG2], CA19118 [WG4]; CA22131 [WG2] and CA22154 [WG4].
I have different accreditation figures: Prof. Auxiliary Doctor, Prof. Contratado Doctor, and Private University. Moreover, I have Certificado R3 (2023); Dos sexenios (2017-2022; 2001-2004,2008-2009)
