Título: Cost Impact of clinical trials and economic evaluation of a health technology

Abstract: Research into new therapies contributes fundamentally to the population's well-being, increasing life expectancy and quality of life. There is a general commitment that research is essential to the National Health System. It is assumed that health care within the framework of a research program usually implies greater complexity and intensity in patient management and, predictably, a more significant economic impact concerning usual medical care. In order to understand the reality of our health system, a retrospective study was carried out in which the health resources and direct costs associated with the care of patients with cancer were identified according to a clinical trial protocol and compared with equivalent health resources and direct costs attributed under conditions of usual attendance.
On the other hand, during the last decade, prostatic artery embolization (PAE) has emerged as a new health technology for treating moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Currently, the reference treatment is transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Considering the substantial differences in the technical aspects of both procedures, we performed a cost analysis and an economic evaluation up to a horizon of five years from the perspective of the Spanish National Health System.
