On June 2 and 3, 2020, more than forty researchers and professionals from different disciplinary backgrounds and countries (scattered over ten time zones, ranging from India to California) gathered at an online workshop organized by Diego Sesma Martín at INARBE and Maite M. Aldaya at IS-FOOD to address the synergies and co-benefits across sectors for a more integrated and coordinated water, energy and food management. In this second edition, Mesfin Mekonnen (University of Nebraska, USA), Ashlynn Stillwell (University of Illinois, USA), Christopher Chini (Air Force Institute of Technology, USA) and Julian Fulton (California State University, USA) were the keynote speakers.
The workshop provided an overview of the state-of-the-art, gaps and advances on the water-food-energy research, data and methods. There are many challenges that confront us. There is still plenty of work ahead, plenty of data to be collected and methodological issues to be resolved. There is still a separation between food-focused researchers and energy-focused ones. The way forward is determined by better integration of these sectors, which will result in greater policy impact at all levels, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.
Diego Sesma Martín is a training researcher at INARBE and a postdoctoral researcher at the Economics Department (UPNA), where he is involved in the project HAR2017-86086-R (AEI/FEDER, UE). Maite M. Aldaya is a researcher at IS-FOOD with the support of the Talent Grant of Obra Social La Caixa and Caja Navarra Foundation.
