Aitor Urrutia Azcona qualified with a MEng in Telecommunication Engineering, a MSci in Communications and a PhD in Engineering in 2009, 2011 and 2015, respectively, from the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), Spain. During the last years, he also received his MBA from Universidad Internacional de La Rioja (2014), and his Master's degree in Secondary Education Teaching from UPNA (2018).
From 2008 to 2012, he worked as Technologist and Research Assistant at UPNA. He also worked at Nanoresist Functional Surfaces (2010-2011) and collaborated with Nadetech Innovations (2014). He worked as a Predoctoral Researcher (UPNA Fellowship, 2012-2016) and a Postdoctoral Researcher. Afterwards, he was Postdoctoral Research Associate at University of Hull (2016-2017) and Research Fellow at University of Birmingham (2017) before returning to UPNA. Currently he is Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering within the area of Electronic Technologies.
He was Visiting Researcher at the Dublin City University (2013) and at the University of Nottingham (2014). He was awarded the Best Final Project in Telecommunication Engineering by Association of Telecommunication Engineering of Navarra in 2010.
He is coauthor of 25 scientific articles in international journals and 35 contributions (posters and orals) in national/international meetings. His current line of research focuses on optical fibre sensors and nanostructured coatings for sensing applications.
Since 2013/2014 course he has been teaching different subjects related to communications and electronic circuits in the Bachelor's Degrees in Telecommunication Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Computer Science at Upna.
He was Adjunct Professor at the Universidad Internacional de La Rioja (May 2016 - Oct 2017). He has supervised 16 Master Thesis and 2 final degree projects. He usually participates as a member of the assessment committee in final degree projects, Master Thesis, and PhD thesis.
Research collaborator at the Institute of Smart Cities (UPNA). Co-founder of the spin-offs Eversens S.L and Pyroistech S.L. Academic Editor in Journal of Sensors. Referee for journals including Sensors and Actuators B: chemical, Journal of Lightwave Technology, Optics Express, IEEE Sensors Journal, Journal of Sensors, and Optics and Laser Technology, among others.
