Carmen Jarén (Montellano, Seville) is an Agricultural Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, center to which she was assigned from 1989 to 1992 as a predoctoral fellow and in which she got her Ph.D. in 1994. In 1992, she joined the Department of Agroforestry Engineering of the Public University of Navarre (UPNA) as professor of University School of Engines, Tractors and Agricultural Machinery and, since 2019, as a Senior University Professor in the Department of Engineering.
Her research activity has focused on the field of Agricultural Machinery, from job safety and health at work in agriculture to the physical properties of agricultural products (mechanical properties, optical properties, image analysis, near-infrared spectroscopy, hyperspectral image,etc.. ) and, specially in its applications to the determination of damage, diseases, evolution of texture, quality determination and process automation.
Jarén co-authored over 100 publications between scientific publications in international journals (JCR) and science magazines. Reviewer in Journal of Spectroscopy, Computers and Electronics in Agriculture, Sensors, Biosystems Engineering, Journal of Food Engineering, Food Analytical Methods, Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, Journal of Food Processing & Technology, Food Chemistry, Agricultural Science Research Journal, etc.She has completed research stages in centers and universities such as the Scottish Centre of Agricultural Engineering of Edinburgh (Scotland), University of Evora (Portugal) and the Federal University of Viçosa (Brazil). As a result of this work, she has received the First Prize of Project Job Safety, Ideactiva Award and 3M Prize.
Since joining the Public University of Navarre, she has participated in 15 research projects with public funds and, in 8 of them, as principal researcher and has signed more than 37 agreements with companies and public agencies. She has also participated in recent years as a guest lecturer, as well as a member of the organising and advisory committees in different international congresses. She has also given over a 150 papers in congresses, national and international. Currently has 4 intellectual property registrations, all of which are software applications related to tractor rollover and ROPS.
She is a member of the Club of Bologna, Spanish Society for Horticultural Science, the Spanish Society of Agricultural Engineering (currently, president), American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and European Society of Agricultural Engineering (currently, Council members), several ISO committees, and a member of the Jury of Technical Innovations International Fair of Agricultural Machinery (FIMA).
