Manuel López-Amo was born in Madrid and is a University Professor and head of the Optical Communications Group at the Public University of Navarra (Spain). Previously he was an associate profesor of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a visiting researcher in British telecom. research labs (Ipswich, UK) and Ghent University (Belgium). He was the recipient of the extraordinary doctorate prize of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
In 1996, he moved to Universidad Publica de Navarra ( Pamplona ) where he became Full Professor in the Electrical and Electronical Engineering department and is currently the head of the optical communications group of this department. He has been the Head of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department and also of the Engineering Faculty of this university.
He was also the Chairman of the Optoelectronic Committee of the Spanish Optical Society (SEDO). He has been leader of more than 40 research projects and he has coauthored more than 350 papers in international refereed journals and conferences.
He has been or is a member of 34 technical committees of international conferences, currently with the Optical Fiber Sensors Conference, (OFS) and European Workshop on fibre optic sensors (EWOFS). He was chairman of the technical committee at the OFS23 conference and he will be again the technical chairman of the OFS29.
Since 2020, he belongs to the 2% of the most cited scientists in the world, according to the Stanford University ranking. He is a member of the IEC/CENELEC expert committee in working group TC 86/SC 86C/WG 2: Fibre optic sensors since 2012. He is or has been associate editor of the journals: Scientific reports, Frontiers in sensors and Journal of Lightwave Technology among others. He was also chairman of the Optoelectronics committee of the Spanish Optics Society.
He has supervised 18 Ph. D. works and has obtained three times the BBVA research award of the Universidad Publica de Navarra.
He has participated in the management committes of the European cost 299 y TD1001 actions. He is a senior member of IEEE and he also belongs to OSA and EOS.
