Admission of foreign students

Staying in Spain

EU Students

Students coming from European Union countries do not require a visa to enter and stay in Spain, and do not require any kind of permit to study and work in the country.

However, EU citizens who want to stay in Spain longer than 3 months are obliged to apply for registration with relevant authorities in the host country (Certificado de registro de Ciudadano de la Unión Europea).

Requirements:  

1. Being a student in an official academic centre, either public or private.

2. Having medical coverage in Spain (i.e. European Health Card)

3. Proof of having enough money to cover living expenses during the stay. This is not necessary when participating in European Exchange Programmes such as "Erasmus Programme".

Applications must be proceeded personally at the  Oficina de Extranjería de Pamplona in 3 months’ time after the arrival in Spain.

The registration certificate will be issued immediately.

Non-EU Students

If you want to study in an educational centre officially recognized in Spain for more than three months, it is necessary to apply for a Student visa.

TYPES OF VISA

  • 180 day Visa: this type of visa is valid to study for one semester.
     
  • 90 day Visa: valid to study for a full academic year.
    Once in Spain, students must apply for for their Student Card (TIE) if their stay exceeds 6 months.

Student Visa application

Applications must be submitted in person at the diplomatic mission or Spanish Consulate in which the applicant is legally resident.Embajadas y Consulados de España

Documents requested:

  1. Certificate of admission issued by an officially recognised Spanish educational centre, verifying enrollment as a full-time student in order to obtain a degreer or certificate.
  2. Proof of economic means to cover the expenses of your stay and return to your contry.
  3. Proof of public or private health insurance from an insurer recognized and authorized to operate in Spain.
  4. When the lenght of stay exceeds 6 months, some consulates also require a previous medical certificate.
  5. When the lenght of stay exceeds 6 months, some consulates also require a certificate of criminal record.

TIE application

The Student Card (TIE) is the identification document proving the legality of the stay in Spain.

Who needs to apply for TIE

Only those students staying in Spain for more than 6 months need to apply for a TIE card.

 
Applications: Application for Student Card (TIE) must be submitted in person within the first month of stay in Spain at the local Oficina de Extranjería (Avenida de Guipúzcoa 40, Pamplona) . Prior appointment is mandatory.


Required documents:

  • Application Form
  • Valid Passport.
  • Private medical insurance.
  • Class-D visa issued specifically for studies, research or training, or visa exemption if relevant.
  • Certificate proving sufficient financial resources to cover the cost of your stay and return journey to your country of origin, bank deposit, bank transfer, together with their origin, or proof of grant/scholarship.
  • Proof of acceptance or pre-acceptance as a student or researcher at an Official Centre or public or private establishment authorised or recognised by the Ministry of Education at which the activity is to be performed as principal activity with a timetable that implies attendance and for a foreseen period of time of no less than three months.
    Students who are legally minors must also present authorisation to travel to Spain from their parents or guardians.
  • One recent passport-size photograph in colour with a white background.
  • Receipt of processing fees (16,08 €)

Validity: This card is valid only for one year.

Renewal of stay

The application for renewal of stay must be submitted online through the “Sede electrónica” of the Ministry, within a period of 60 days prior and 90 days after the expiration date (recommended browser is Internet Explorer 7 and above).

To submit the application, first you need to follow these steps:

1. Peviously, you need to obtain a Digital Private Individual Certificate, issued by the Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre. You will receive a code.
2. With that code you must go to a Registration Office (prior appointment needed) to prove your identity. Do not forget to carry an ID (NIE or Passport). It is also possible to prove your identity through video identification
3. Download your Certificate User at the FNMT website on the same computer you used to apply and with the same browser.
4. Download Autofirma, which allows to sign electronic documents.

You will need to attach  a scanned copy of these documents to the application form:

  • Passport.
  • Proof of sufficient financial resources to support yourself in Spain for the duration of your studies.
  • Certificate from the Centre or Establishment indicating that you have benefited from the courses or training provided in the previous period, or a favourable report on the development of the research carried out.
  • Letter of acceptance for the course that you are to take over the year.
  • Private medical insurance
  • Receipt of processing fees payment (17,49€).

Once the renewal is granted, it is mandatory to apply for a new TIE card.
