I am a graduate in Mathematics in the University of Zaragoza (1999) and I got my Ph.D. in Mathematics in the UPV-ehu (2003). I was postdoctoral researcher at the CNRS (France) in 2003-2004 and 2005-2007, in the framework of the European Hyperbolic and Kynetic Equations (HYKE) research project.

I am a teacher in UPNA since 2008. In this time, I have been doctoral assistant teacher, doctoral hired teacher, since 2011, and full professor since 2023 and always in the Department of Automation and Computing (now Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics)

Along this period, my main research duties have covered subjects in Computer Science Engineering and the degree on Computer Science, as, for instance, Informatics in the first course, Artificial Intelligence or Computing. Nowadays I am responsible of  Computing in the sixth semester of the Computer Science degree. I have also advised several graduation works and co-advised two Ph.D. thesis.
I am a member of the research Group on Artificial Intelligence and Approximate reasoning (GIARA) of the UPNA, led by Dr. Humberto Bustince. My main research lines are: Fuzzy theory, extensions of fuzzy theory, aggregation functions, computing, differential equations and unique continuation; image processing.
I have authored more tan 30 papers in JCR journals, most of them in Q1. Some of the most relevant ones are the ones on linear orders for intervals
Generation of linear orders for intervals by means of aggregation functions
H Bustince, J Fernández, A Kolesárová, R Mesiar
Fuzzy Sets and Systems 220, 69-77
Which is among the most cited papers according to  Web of Science; and Works about handling incomplete or imperfect information:   Overlap functions
H Bustince, J Fernandez, R Mesiar, J Montero, R Orduna
Nonlinear Analysis: Theory, Methods & Applications 72 (3), 1488-1499
interval-valued fuzzy sets constructed from matrices. Application to edge detection
H Bustince, E Barrenechea, M Pagola, J Fernández
Fuzzy Sets and Systems 160 (13), 1819-1840
Apart from the Works on unique continuation for parabolic operators
Unique continuation for parabolic operators
L. Escauriaza, F.J. Fernández
Arkiv fur Matematik, 41, (2003) , 35-60
I have also taken part in three research projects funded by the Spanish government and in several collaborations with private companies. I am co-editor of the Mathware and Soft Computing magazine, and member of the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems,  Axioms and Sci journasl. I have also co-edited two special issues of Fuzzy Sets and Systems.
Regarding management, I have been a sindical representative at the hired teaching and researching personal committee of the University, coordinator of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence area of my department since 2014 and secretary of the department since 2016 till 2018
