C. R. Zamarreño received the MS degree in Telecommunications and his PhD in Communications from the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) in 2005 and 2009 respectively. In 2021 he obtained a Permanent position as Associate Professor at the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at UPNA at the same time that he also obtained the Professor habilitation given by ANECA. He has two positive five-year teaching evaluation and three favorable six-year research evaluations (one of them associated to research transfer).

The work developed by Carlos R. Zamarreño at UPNA has 3 fundamental pillars, which are teaching, academic management and finally research and transfer.

Respect to the academic teaching, during the last 12 years Dr. Zamarreño has been Assistant Professor (2 years) and Associate Professor (10 years) of the Electrical, Electronic and Communications Engineering Department (EECE) and responsible of several subjects in degrees and Masters related to the EECE Dept. He has either supervised or co-supervised in this period 4 PhD thesis and more than 30 master theses. He is currently co-supervising three PhD thesis (1 FPI, 1 UPNA predoc. Grant and 1 Industrial PhD) that will finish in 2024 two of them and in 2025.

Regarding the management Dr. Zamarreño has hold several positions at UPNA and other institutions. Just to mention a couple of them, he was the Deputy Director and secretary of the EECE Dept. between the years 2014-2018 and 2018-19 respectively. He has hold the position of responsible for quality assurance in the MSc of Industrial Engineering from 2018 to 2021 and he holds the position of Director of the EECE Department since 2021. He is also an IEEE Photonics Society Member representative in the IEEE Sensors Council AdCom as well as IEEE Sensors Council and System Council Spain Section Joint Chapter President since February 2021.

In the R+D aspect, the specialty of Dr. Ruiz-Zamarreño is associated to fiber optic sensors for chemical and biological applications based on micro and nanostructured coatings, which basically consists of studying and discovering fundamental physical aspects of light-matter interactions and apply these discoveries for their real use in instrumentation. Just to give some data, in these last 18 years Dr. Ruiz-Zamarreño has published more than 80 publications in JCR journals (50 of them in Q1 journals) in collaboration with more than 80 co-authors worldwide, obtaining more than 3000 citations in the last eighteen year period with an h-index of 30. In 2008 he was a visiting scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, MA, USA), working on the fabrication of micro and nanostructured thin-films. In 2011 he obtained a grant from the UPNA to perform a post-doctoral research stay at Siemens AG (Munich, Germany) in the group of Prof. Maximilian Fleischer associated to the development of gas sensors. Carlos also obtained competitive research grants from Bank of Santander and Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (José Castillejo) in 2013 and 2016 respectively to perform a research stay at the Photonics Laboratories at Universidade Technologica do Parana (Parana, Brazil), working in the development of advanced optical instrumentation for gas and oil companies.

Carlos R. Zamarreño has been involved in 5 research projects with international and national companies and participated in 23 public financed research projects (1 European, 6 national, 14 regional and 2 local), 9 of them as Principal Investigator  (1 European, 1 National, 5 Regional and 2 local). He has also registered 2 patents and he is also the co-founder of 2 spin-off companies (Eversens S.L. and Pyroistech S.L., still active and in good position) one of them associated to the development of optical instrumentation for the agrifood industry.

Finally, Dr. Zamarreño received in 2013 the IEEE Graduate Of the Last Decade (GOLD) Award for his "contributions to the development of novel optical sensing waveguides based on micro and nano-structured films", he is an active project reviewer for several international research agencies as well as associate editor of MDPI Sensors, Micro&Nano Letters and Hindawi Journal of Sensors and “Fiber Optic” Topical Editor of IEEE Sensors Journal.
