Seminario de Investigación IMAB: THE CURRENT STATUS OF WILD GRAPEVINE POPULATIONS AROUND THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN: A GENETIC RESOURCE UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE CONDITIONS

Rosa Arroyo García

El IMAB celebra el próximo viernes 10 de Mayo a las 11:00 en la Sala de Conferencias del Edificio Jerónimo de Ayanz, un seminario de investigación impartido por Rosa Arroyo García.

Resumen:

The Eurasian grapevine (Vitis vinifera L) is the most widely cultivated and economically important fruit crop in the world. Vitis vinifera L. includes the cultivated form V. vinifera ssp. vinifera and the wild form V. vinifera ssp. sylvestris, considered as two subspecies based on morphological differences. It can be argued that those differences are the result of the domestication process. The wild form, considered the putative ancestor of the cultivated form, represents the only endemic taxon of the Vitaceae in Europe. Although wild grapevines were spread over Southern Europe and Western and Central Asia during the Neolithic period, archeological and historical evidences suggest that domestication events would had occurred in the Near-East. In addition, several studies have shown evidence supporting the existence of secondary domestication events along the Mediterranean basin. Recent genetic analyses provided evidences supporting the Eastern origin of most cultivated germplasm as well as the existence of introgression from wild germplasm in Western regions, likely as the consequence of those predicted secondary domestication events.

ROSA ARROYO GARCÍA es investigadora del Centro de Biotecnología y Genómica de Plantas-CBGP (UPM-INIA), y es la responsable de la unidad de investigación “Phenotypic and molecular analysis of crop natural variation”.
