Overview and Basic Information

The Public University of Navarre’s Undergraduate Degree in Law is based on a Law degree –licenciatura- which was first taught at the University in the academic year 1993/1994 and went on to become one of its most highly valued qualifications. The course is, therefore, an acknowledged, well-established programme, the main aim of which is to endow professionals with overall knowledge of all the fields related to legal matters, highly capable of understanding and interpreting legal institutions and the rules governing the system. Undergraduates acquire skills and abilities in the field through a teaching method adapted to the modern day, focusing on a capacity for analysis and synthesis, oral and written communication, the capacity to solve problems and critical reasoning.
By transmitting such competences, the course aims to enable graduates to join and adjust to both the public sector, as legal consultants, chiefly at the different levels of government, and the private sector, mainly in companies, not forgetting that it also provides a stepping stone towards the later specialisation required in order to practise as Lawyers. The new Undergraduate Degree in Law is, therefore, a sound, modern course in which the quality of the teaching provided and education received goes first, and which aims to allow graduates to join any of the many professions involved in the legal world.

Application and Admission

130 new Undergraduate Degree in Law places are made available each year: 90 on the single-subject Undergraduate Degree in Law course and 40 on the Double Undergraduate Degree in Law and Business Administration and Management course.

There are different pathways to the course depending on the educational background and age of each student. Find out who can apply here.
In summary:

  • Students taking Spanish sixth-form education (Bachillerato): need to pass the Spanish University Access Examinations (Selectividad).
  • Students studying vocational training: the average grade of the relevant cycle is taken into account and can be increased by taking the specific phase of the Spanish University Access Examinations (Selectividad).
  • Foreign students: the requirements are different for EU and non-EU students.
  • Students who already have a university degree: 3% of the places available are reserved for students of this kind.
  • Students from other Universities or who wish to change course: the new course they wish to take must recognise at least 30 of the ECTS credits they have already earned.
  • Over-25s who are not eligible for entry via any of the other pathways must pass a specific entrance examination process.
  • Over-40s with professional experience, but not in possession of the academic qualifications required for entry: must meet the specific entry requirements for over-40s: evaluation of CV and personal interview.
  • Over-45s not in possession of the academic qualifications required for entry: must pass a special entrance examination process adapted to their age group.

In order to start this degree course, students should, amongst other things:

Academic Opportunities

The Undergraduate Degree in Law allows graduates to take the Master’s Degree providing Access to the Legal Profession, within the framework of Act 34/2006, of 30 October, on access to the Legal Profession.

Law graduates may also take the  Master’s Degree in Occupational Risk Prevention offered by the Faculty of Law.

External Placement

Students must earn 6 External Placement ECTS credits in semester 8 through an external placement module which forms part of the Study Programme for the course (curricular placement). The external placements consist of performing the activities of legal experts of different kinds in Public/Private Centres and Institutions involved in the practical application of Law. To this end, the University has reached the necessary agreements to ensure that students taking part receive suitable practical training. The contents of the external placements are organised in line with the educational activities relevant to the student’s profile and are coherent with and unify the theoretical input received in the classroom. The most important feature of the placement module is that it allows students to gain practical work experience in professional centres external to the university where they have the opportunity to observe the activities and functions involved in the kind of work they are training for and learn how the services provided are organised and structured. Students may choose to complete their practical work experience period in centres involved in the Justice System, Public Administration, the practice of law or arbitration proceedings. The external placement destinations are common to the different specialisms included in the course Programme.
In order to enrol in external placement modules, students must have previously earned 75% of all the basic and core module credits relevant to the undergraduate degree course. External work experience for academic purposes will comply with current regulations governing the matter.

Students also have the chance to do external placements not included in the Study Programme on a voluntary basis while still studying. These placement programmes are run by the Foundation University - Society

Final Year Project

The Final Year Project facilitates overall evaluation of the competences relevant to the degree, condensing the training provided in all the different modules. It is obligatory and is worth 6 ECTS credits.

Students must produce a research project on a topic from any of the main subjects in the course programme. A professor is assigned to each student to monitor his/her work and help him/her find and manage the information required and write up the final project.

Students can enrol for the FYP when they have earned all the other credits needed in order to be awarded the degree or when they enrol for the last modules they need in order to earn all such credits. For the purposes of evaluation, the enrolment fee includes the right to be examined in the same academic year in which students enrol for the FYP.

Evaluation: formative continuous assessment of the competences defined for the Degree based on learning outcomes which demonstrate acquisition, applying different assessment criteria depending on the type of activity performed.

Language Competence

In order to be awarded the Undergraduate Degree in Law, students must demonstrate level B1 competence in a foreign language (English, French, German or Italian) by means of, at least, one of the following:

  • The use of the relevant foreign language in the Report and defence of their Final Year Project. The Report must include a summary and one or more relevant chapters in the foreign language. Approximately 50% of the defence of the Final Year Project must be made in the foreign language. The rest of the report and defence may be in Spanish, Basque or the chosen foreign language.
  • Passing at least 3 modules taken in the chosen language.
  • Taking part in a mobility programme in the foreign language.
  • Passing a B1 examination or accrediting the B1 level.

Mobility

Students taking the Undergraduate Degree in Law may take part in national and international mobility programmes which the Public University of Navarre makes available. National mobility programmes allow students to study for a period of time at a Spanish university with the same guarantees of academic recognition and progress as those which their universities of origin provide as part of the SICUE programme. The Faculty of Law offers Law undergraduates places on mobility programmes at such universities as the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Alicante, the University of Cantabria, the University of La Rioja, the University of Lleida and the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.

Law undergraduates also have the opportunity to study at foreign universities on International mobility programmes which entail recognition of the modules they take abroad. The Public University of Navarre primarily offers places on the Erasmus Programme in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and the United Kingdom. There are also places in Mexico and Peru as part of the Palafox Programme. Finally, periods of study are available in the USA as part of the ISEP Programme. The international mobility is an option in the Double Undergraduate Degree in Law and Business Administration and Management as well, meaning that students can study in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and Turkey through the Erasmus Programme and also make the most of the Palafox Programme to study in Mexico. Likewise, periods of study are available in the USA as part of the ISEP Programme.

Types of Students

Student status

The following student statuses exist depending on the number of credits enrolled for:

  • Fulltime students: 60 - 84 ECTS credits per academic year. Students remain as fulltime students even when they need less than 60 credits in order to complete their studies.
  • Part-time students: 30 - 59 ECTS credits per academic year. This is a voluntary status and no justification is required.
  • Reduced-timetable students: 12 - 29 ECTS credits per academic year.

In addition to the previous categories, the possible existence of special educational needs may give rise to a fourth status granted on the basis of case-by-case analysis.

Reduced-timetable status is granted in exceptional circumstances by the Rector or competent Vice-rector. Applications must be presented on a general request form at the Office of the University Registrar, together with supporting documentation.

Undergraduate Degree Introduction Schedule

  • Academic year 2010/2011: introduction of the first and second semesters of the new Undergraduate Degree in Law, and discontinuation of the first year of the Second-cycle Degree (Licenciatura) in Law.
  • Academic year 2011/2012: introduction of the third and fourth semesters of the new Undergraduate Degree in Law, and discontinuation of the second year of the Second-cycle Degree (Licenciatura) in Law.
  • Academic year 2012/2013: introduction of the fifth and sixth semesters of the new Undergraduate Degree in Law, and discontinuation of the third year of the Second-cycle Degree (Licenciatura) in Law.
  • Academic year 2013/2014: introduction of the seventh and eighth semesters of the new Undergraduate Degree in Law, and discontinuation of the fourth year of the Second-cycle Degree (Licenciatura) in Law.

Once an academic year of the Second-cycle Degree (Licenciatura) in Law has been discontinued, students may register for it over the following two academic years and may attempt to pass each module twice per academic year. If the number of students repeating an academic year exceeds the number set by the University, then teaching will continue to be provided according to the old plan; otherwise, students will be provided with tutorials in order to complete their degree courses.

Support and Monitoring

The Faculty of Law holds a welcoming session for first-year students each academic year to inform them about essential organisational aspects of their courses and the Faculty itself. A member of the Dean leadership team is also in charge of each qualification and is available to answer specific enquiries about the Degree course via the Faculty’s email: facultad.cienciasjuridicas@unavarra.es

In order to guide and motivate students, and, consequently, ensure better academic performance, the Public University of Navarre implements the Tutorship Plan. Through the Plan, each student is assigned a Professor as his/her Personal Tutor to accompany him/her throughout his/her time at the University. Through a number of meetings with their students, the University’s Personal Tutors try to help new students adapt to university life and mix in, and provide them over their time at the University with guidance regarding their Final Year Projects, professional careers and further studies. Depending on the type of problem a student is faced with, his/her Personal Tutor may redirect him/her to the competent person or body, or to the support services which the University provides (Student Information Office, Social Action Unit, Health Care Unit, University Ombudsman, etc.).

The Public University of Navarre’s Social Action Unit helps students with special needs as a result of disabilities. The aim of the Social Action Unit’s Disability Support Programme is to ensure equality regarding University entry and forming part of university life, and is based on a specific plan designed for each student.

The Unit endeavours to be there for students with disabilities at three key points in their academic development, through a range of initiatives:

Pre-university initiatives, liaising with Secondary Education guidance services and Navarre's Special Education Resource Centre in order to plan the support required sufficiently in advance.
Initiatives while students are studying at the University: reception of and information for students with special educational needs; examination of the situation and needs assessment through personal interviews, and definition of the support and intervention required.
Initiatives designed to help students find work in coordination with the University’s guidance and employment promotion services.
