Facilities

The theory classes for our courses are given in the teaching block, which is used by the entire University. But the School of Agricultural Engineering also has 59 laboratories for teaching and research, and a Practical Facility covering more than 300,000 m2 all of its own. The School has its own weather station as well.

The Agricultural Practical Work and Research Facility is located on the Arrosadia Campus behind the El Sario building. It takes up more than 300,000 square metres and has been operational since November 1996.

Objetives

The Facility, which is managed by the School of Agricultural Engineering, is used for practical work by Agricultural, Food and Rural Environment Engineering, and Innovation in Food Processes and Products undergraduates. It is also used for agricultural-oriented Research and Development (R&D) projects carried out at the University, including Final Year Projects.


Description

The 30 hectares, all of which can be irrigated, are currently subdivided into the following units:

•    Open-air fields:

  • Extensive crops: 20.4 ha
  • Vegetable crops: 1.1 ha
  • Permanent crops (fruit trees and vinesyards): 8.5 ha

•    Plastic tunnels and greenhouses: 3,320 m2 of plastic tunnels or greenhouses divided up into 6 units: 4 x 350 m2 of forcing tunnels and 2 x 960 m2 of multi-bay tunnels.

•    Glasshouses: 3 glasshouses covering 1,300 m2 and equipped with: Thermal screen; Heating system; Cooling system; Fog system; Table irrigation system; Ventilation system; Equipment to register environmental parameters; Descaling equipment.

•    Garden areas:

  • 1,509 m2 English Garden. Garden area with lawn, pre-existing trees, consisting of large elms, and more recently planted columnar maples, limes and hornbeams. An ophite gravel path crosses the garden and ends at a brook which runs across the garden waiting for a bridge to be built which will join the garden up with future extensions. There is also a wooden pergola on the path with climbing roses which will cover it entirely in the future.
  • The entire area is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system.
  • 1,430 m2 Formal Garden. Geometrically shaped formal garden formed by ophite gravel paths with concrete curbs which demarcate the individual gardens. These individual gardens are identical in terms of composition: box plants forming hedges and clumps, which in some gardens enclose beds of creeping roses. The entire garden is bordered by a European privet hedge which is higher than the box plants and closes off the perimeter. The garden is equipped with a sprinkler and drip irrigation system connected to a programmer.
  • Collection of 48 varieties of roses in four terraces covering a total of 325 m2. The collection includes a wide range of different sizes, blooming periods and colours, including the best-known varieties and those most commonly grown over history, alongside those varieties most commonly found nowadays.

Other installations and equipment

The Facility also has 6 refrigeration chambers, 6 germination chambers; 4 Fitotrons; a farming machinery workshop and garage with 2 tractors (91 and 42 CV) with the relevant implements, a power tiller, two all-terrain vehicles and a van; rooms prepared for milling, with 3 mills; 5 plant drying ovens; an autoclave for substrate; a weather station; offices and changing rooms.

Human resources

The Practical Work Facility has 3 members of staff: a manager and two agricultural officers.


Activities

Most of the work performed at the facility is related to the practical work involved in the qualifications awarded by the School.

The practical work that students carry out is for modules related to Biology and Plant Physiology, Soil Science and Climatology, Surveying, Viticulture, Crop Protection, Arable Crops, Fruit Farming, Agricultural Machinery, Aromatic Plants, Parks and Gardens, etc. The greenhouses are chiefly used for research work and Final Projects.

Since its creation, the Facility has played a fundamental role in the production of Degree Final Project and Master’s Degree Final Projects.
