University statutes

Approved by the Staff Representing Board on March 7, 2003 and the Government of Navarre on May 12, 2003. The Public University of Navarre is governed by Statutes approved in May 2003, adapting its internal structure to the University Act of December 2001. These Statutes replaced the originals which were prepared at the University itself and approved in 1995. Before that time, the University was governed by provisional Statutes approved by the Management Committee established after the institution was created by a law passed by the regional government on April 21, 1987.

The current Statutes establish the principal lines of the institution's organisation, contemplating the different governing bodies and how each of them is involved in the different sectors of the university community, together with other representatives of society. The organisational structure gives priority to general governing bodies and coordinates their relations to specific boards, in order to guarantee acoherent external control of each department's autonomy.

Likewise, all sectors of the university community are expected to converge to guarantee renovation of academic life and the quality of public higher education according to European standards.

Basque at the University

The Statutes establish that Spanish and Basque (Euskera) are both languages of Navarre and therefore, all University members are entitled to know and use both languages in the terms established by relevant legislation. The University provides teaching and courses in Basque and has a Linguistic Planning Commission to present proposals in the field to the Governing Board. On the other hand, the University has established relations with public and private agencies working in the field of Basque.
