Research is conducted by permanent staff members, assistants, associate
professors and scholars. Their number grows every year and they currently
total around 760 working in some
ninety research groups.
The distribution of our research staff by field of knowledge
is balanced according to the University's departments and their
incidence on said fields. 30% of the research groups belong to the Basic
and Health Science field, followed by Social Science
(26.5%), Engineering and Technology (23.5%) and, finally, Economics and
Law (20%). Both our research staff and the number of research projects
has grown both in basic -funded by European Union programmes, the Spanish
or the Navarre Government and in applied science, transferred to companies
and agencies through the University Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI
Navarre). In general lines, research products are similarly distributed
among the different fields of knowledge.

Doctoral Thesis
Part of this research is aimed at doctoral theses. By area of
knowledge, they are concerned with Engineering and Technology (33%), followed
by Biomedical, Exact and
Natural Sciences (28%), Economics, Business Science
and Law (23%) and Social Science (13%).
Grants and Financial Aid
One important aspect of research is the annual supply of
public grants aimed at fostering training in research. They
include grants for introduction to research, doctorate courses, predoctoral
and postdoctoral research and bridgegrants for doctorate students, in
addition to financial aid to cover living expenses in other countries
for predoctoral scholars.
Services to researchers and companies
The Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI Navarre) depends on the Rector's
Department of Research and its purpose is to promote and manage relations
between University researchers, companies and official agencies, encouraging
the transfer of science-technology to the productive sectors. It is basically
responsible for research contracts with companies, patents, European R&D
and innovation projects and the detection of technological demand and
supply. The office mediated in 124 contracts in 2002.
The Research Support Service is the unit created to coordinate the provision
of experimental technique services to the University's research groups
and public and private enterprise. In 2002, this service issued 102 reports
and quality certificates.
The Institute of Agri-biotechnology
Its activity is focused on research in fields such as physiology, biochemistry
and the molecular biology of plants. More recently, it has embarked upon
projects related to natural resources in the form of the region's flora
and fauna. It was created by agreement with the Scientific Research Council
and the Government of
Navarre is also involved.
