Ever since 1983 the University Reform Law imposed the department structure in the university. In other words, the department is the organising unit for the development of the research and teaching activity of the subject areas belonging to each of these units.

The Public University of Navarre is one of the first universities to comply with the Reform Law, becoming closer to the model of English speaking universities.

The departments also promote other scientific, technical and artistic activities and stimulate the teaching and research staff to progress further scientifically and pedagogically. For a department to be constituted at least a number of permanent professors and lecturers are required.

There are about twenty departments in the Public University of Navarre which include the following subject areas.
